Holiday savings calculator
Add up the full cost of your trip — not just the flights and hotel — then see exactly how much to put aside each month to have it saved in time.
1 · Holiday costs
2 · Spending money & timeline
Estimates only. Costs vary by destination, season and how far ahead you book. The contingency buffer covers baggage fees, exchange-rate movement and the odd surprise — worth keeping in.
How much should I save each month for a holiday?
Add up the whole trip — flights, accommodation, transfers, insurance, parking, excursions and spending money — add a buffer for surprises, then divide what is left to save by the months until you go. This free calculator does the sums and shows the monthly and weekly amount, and whether it fits your budget.
Worked example
Two people, saving for 12 months, with nothing saved yet:
| Flights (£300 each) | £600 |
|---|---|
| Accommodation | £900 |
| Transfers, insurance, parking & bags, excursions | £490 |
| Spending money (£250 each) | £500 |
| 10% buffer | £249 |
| Total holiday cost | £2,739 |
| Save each month | £228 for 12 months |
| Or each week | £53 |
A £2,739 holiday in 12 months means saving about £228 a month. These are the calculator's starting figures — change them above for your own answer.
How does the holiday calculator work?
- Set how many people are going.
- Enter flights and spending money per person, and the other costs as totals.
- Choose a buffer for baggage fees, exchange-rate changes and the odd surprise — 10% to start with.
- Set the months until you go and anything already saved.
- We divide the amount still to save by the months left, and show it as a weekly figure too. Add your income and outgoings to check it fits.
Holiday calculator questions
How much spending money should I take?
It depends on the destination, the season and how you like to travel. A simple way to set it is a daily amount per person multiplied by the number of days, plus anything you plan to buy.
Why add a buffer?
Holidays rarely cost exactly what you planned. Baggage fees, exchange-rate movements, taxis and meals out all add up. A 10% buffer means a small surprise does not end up on a credit card.
What if I cannot save it in time?
Add your income and outgoings and the calculator shows how many months it would take at the amount you can spare, so you can move the date or trim the cost.
Is travel insurance included?
Yes, as its own line. Buy it when you book so you are covered if you have to cancel.
